The sun is out, and I am already thinking of the snow

It’s May and the summer is just kicking off, but what I’m really enjoying at the moment is the amount of buzz around gadgets, gizmos and new gear for the 2011/12 ski and boarding season.

Last week I saw news on twitter of a pole that can be strapped to a snowboard, to help along the flat bits.  Anyone who is learning to board will know the feeling of seeing the dreaded flat ahead, and know that unless you have a charitable skiing buddy next to you, it’s going to be a long walk ahead.  But you have to consider, what’s going to ruin your credibility less: walking across said flat stretch, or kneeling down, unstrapping a pole on your board and starting punting Venice-stylee?  Boarding is cool, let’s keep it that way please!  My advice would be to learn to go faster while you can, then you’ll cruise the flats!

Meanwhile I met Rory from Surefoot not so long back – a great company which customises ski boots.  Everyone who has ever skied will understand the pain that can be caused by badly fitted boots – in fact it’s the reason I started boarding – so the guys at Surefoot started to customise boots for their clients.  Twenty five years and nearly half a million boots later, and they’ve hit the nail on the head.  Rory’s just started a quirky blog which may be fun to follow too.

Helmet cams are something I’m going to be looking at for the season ahead too.  I’d love to have a second look at some of the runs after a day up the mountain, so any recommendations for make/model would be much appreciated please!  There are so many new ones launching that it would be good to get some advice.

Gadgets aside,  the best thing about the 2011/12 ski season for me will be the football.  With Man City now officially in the Champion’s League (okay, we have to get through the qualifiers, but still....) this means potential fixtures across Italy and France are on the cards.  The link here is a  genius ski/football company called Alpine Apres.  The company can take lucky punters, who happen to be on a week’s skiing holiday in the Alps, down to some of the top European matches.  So, if you happen to be on holiday during the week of a fixture in a resort from which they operate  (and there are many across Italy and France) you can book in with your rep and see a top fixture for a really reasonable price.  While out boarding in Italy a few years ago I was able to watch Inter Milan vs Liverpool, so as a life-long (and long suffering) City fan, it’s going to be amazing – albeit fairly surreal - to finally watch my team over there.   And all combined with a few days up the mountain too!  Now there’s something to really look forward to!

Reasons to be cheerful!

Many of the lovely Mummy bloggers we work with post regular ‘reasons to be cheerful’ blogs, so we thought we’d take a leaf out of their books and share some of the things that are making the Refresh PR team happy this month…

1. Our new clients

We’re over the moon to have been snapped up by Puddle Ducks, Spectus Window Systems, and naughtone. Here’s a bit about each of them, and what we’ll be doing for them to help make their brands famous:Puddle Ducks

National baby and toddler swimming company, Puddle Ducks, was founded in Cheshire in 2001. Today, Puddle Ducks is owned and operated bywomen who enjoy a flexible and rewarding role and a stable work-life balance. Puddle Ducks’ national network of franchisees are a team of professional women and men who have been solicitors, accountants and senior managers in a past life and are now dedicating their skills and expertise to running their own business while still having the time to enjoy family life. We’ll be supporting Puddle Ducks during its presence at The Baby Show at the NEC later this month, before launching a national press office and providing social media support.

Spectus Window SysBuilt Environment PRtems is one of Macclesfield’s biggest employers. It produces high quality PVC-U profiles for manufacture into building products for the residential and commercial markets, including windows, doors, conservatories and ancillary products. Spectus has joined forces with Refresh PR to revolutionise its marketing and communications strategy, and our consultancy role has so far seen us deliver a full marketing analysis and recommendations. In a PR capacity we’re running a hard working press office that targets key buyers and influencers. We’re also handling the launch of some of Spectus’ exciting propositions for two of its core audiences – professional fabricators and installers.

 Interiors PR

naughtone designs, manufactures and supplies furniture that is as useful as it is beautiful. Its entire team is passionate about design, and works hard to produce furniture of an outstanding quality in its UK workshops. The products naughtone creates have all been crafted for real life situations, with pieces based on how we all actually live and work.  naughtone’s clients know they can rely on them to deliver - every time. And, with clients like Google, Jaguar, Waitrose, Red Bull, Sony, Microsoft and O2, this is pretty important. Refresh PR is handling all of naughtone’s external communications, from the production of its monthly newsletter to award entries and trade and consumer media relations. We’re taking to the streets of Clerkenwell with them later this month for Clerkenwell Design Week, too – hope to see you there!

2. Our new office

Refresh PR has a new home! We can now be found in Manchester City Centre, in our new offices in Piccadilly Gardens. We’re very happy indeed here and hope you’ll pop in for a nosy soon. Be warned, though, it’s dangerously close to all the shops and restaurants! Our new address is: Piccadilly House, 49 Piccadilly, Manchester, M1 2AP.

3. Our new recruit

As well as relocating, we’ve also grown our team with the appointment of the talented Joanne Lynsdale. An English graduate and a footie mad Sky Sports News addict, Joanne is a fantastic addition to the Refresh PR team. You can follow her on Twitter @joannelynsdale1 to find out what it’s really like to work at Refresh PR.

4. Client success

Our final reason to be cheerful comes in the form of our longstanding client, Photolink Creative Group, the Manchester agency which is responsible for the beautiful images and videos on the John Lewis website, the production of the Argos catalogue, and Regis and Kitbag.com’s trailblazing social media campaigns. As well as securing coverage in the industry’s most respected titles, including NMA, Marketing Week, Brand Republic and Campaign, we’ve also been busy behind the scenes, crafting award entries for Photolink. Three entries we produced have been shortlisted for top industry gongs, so we’ve got everything crossed for big wins at the Marketing Week Engage Awards and The Big Chip Awards over the next couple of months.

If you’re feeling particularly cheerful, please tell us why below!
